220 / FASHION (MONTH) WRAP-UP

As the Fall 2010 runway season comes to a close in Paris, I decided to go through and list my top shows of the season. What intrigues me the most about fashion season is that fact that it gives us, the fashion public, a 10-minute story in which we are transported into a different world. The lights, the stage, the music, the venue, the styling, hair and makeup all come together to produce something magical. There’s absolutely nothing like it.

So here are my top selections for this season (meaning collections I want to own every piece of!)

My top pick from fashion month has to be Haider Ackermann, this collection was by far my favorite. This collection screams seduction even down to slow strut the models did on the runway. Ackermann’s signature jackets were on display but this time even more dramatic with oversized collars that could be styled a number of ways. He’s seemed to have mastered the balance of still achieving a structured look with layers upon layers. If I could wear every piece from this collection, I don’t think I’d ever get bored. Love, love love it!

Sharon Wauchob’s collection was inspired by minimalism and upon first glance, one may think that the collection was a bit repetitive. However, I loved her use of fabric and details. I loved the slash effect that was used (especially on the multi-colored chiffon dress above) as well and the outwear pieces.

I loved the slight 90s nod that this collection had. There was mix of the hard and soft with the sheer pieces and flowy fabric being contrasted again the structure of some of the dresses. The styling with the thigh-highs and the combat boots were also a nice touch. My favorite part of the collection? The belted coats/dresses! I need one of those in my size ASAP!

Louise Goldin says her collection was “space military” which was translated into structured skirts, top and jackets that were offset by the slickness of leather and various animal prints of the leggings and shoulder details. There were also geometric detailing as seen on an amazing shirt and skirt combination. The military-influenced color palette of black, olive green, blue and red as well as the heavy eye makeup and unkempt hair married together quite nicely to create a cohesive but not boring journey into the future.

Filip Arickx and An Vandevorst sent down an army of models dressed in monochromatic structured outfits of black, nude and red. There was a definite armor-like feeling throughout the collection as there were tops and over-the-knee boots with metal bolt detailing. The best part is that for all of that hard and stiff feeling, it was contrasted with exquisitely draped tops and jersey skirts. They all played off of each other to create an amazing collection full of great looks.

Primal. A bit animalistic and nomadic. This season Rick Owens sent strong, warrior-like women down the runway who seemed unapologetically powerful. There was no shortage of outerwear, which Owens is known for, but he expanded and included down coats/vest as well as luxurious fur mittens and jackets. A lot of people seemed to be iffy on this collection but I actually loved it upon first glance.

Who/what were your favorite shows this season? Marc Jacobs definitely put on a beautiful show this season as did Rodarte. I liked Burberry and surprisingly Chanel who I never like.

218 / GARETH PUGH FALL 2010

Everyone knows my favorite designer is Gareth Pugh. The collection that he sent down the runways of Paris this week was one his most wearable ones to date. He is crafting his vision and love of theatrics into amazing leather coats, chainmail dresses and pants, wide leg trousers and chevron-patterned sheer dresses. I, for one, am not disappointed, I’m actually digging the evolution he’s going through. Everyone wanted to know if he’d be able to create wearable garments while still maintaining his voice and this collection, as well as the Spring 2010 collection, answers with a resounding yes. This is why I look forward to Paris Fashion Week.

125 / PAUSE FOR A SECOND: ALEXANDER MCQUEEN S/S 2010

To say that Paris Fashion Week is my favorite fashion week is the understatement of the year. There is so much talent that shows in a week’s period that I can barely wrap my head around all of it but I’m trying!

Alexander McQueen has always been one of my favorite designers because I’m obviously a sucker for the dramatics. His Spring 2010 collection blew my mind! The shoes were SO INSANE! Honestly there’s not much that I can say, this collection is pure genius! Have a look and enjoy!

119 / I DIE: GARETH PUGH S/S 2010

I’m sure everyone has that one band/group/artist that you loved since the very beginning. You were there loving them when the rest of the world could care less. Your relationship/bond getting tighter over time. You become protective of that bond when the world finally realizes what its been missing out on. You want them to succeed but to stay true to who and what they are. That perfectly describes my relationship with Gareth Pugh. Everyone has their favorite designer, he is mine.

Following his work from Central St. Martins to runways of London and Paris has been amazing. I’m always extra excited to see his collections because he is one of the designers that has a very distinct vision. He knows what he wants to say and doesn’t water it down to please the “mainstream” fashion world. He makes wearable art, simply put. To some it can be over-the-top and ridiculous but to others, myself included, he’s pretty much a genius.

Over time, he gained mainstream attention and became the darling of the fashion world and consistently put out cool fucking clothes like nothing had changed. I loved him even more for that. I have to admit, seeing pop culture starlets such as Beyonce and Rihanna wear his clothing left a bad taste in my mouth. Only because I didn’t want him to become synonymous with that world. I wanted him to be taken as a serious designer and not end up like the Lindsay Lohan at Ungaro situation. Ugh. To put it bluntly, I didn’t think they could do his clothing justice.

I’m coming to realize that if his latest collection is evidence of the result, I don’t mind sharing him with the rest of the world. This is beyond amazing.

So tell me, do you have a favorite designer? If so, let me know who in the comments!
