102 / S/S 2010 NYFW REPORT (PART ONE)
Ladies and gentlemen, fashion week has officially started (well last Thursday) and even though I’m not in New York, thankfully Twitter has kept me abreast of the week’s festivities. I’ve combed through dozens of collections and present you with 5 of my favorite collections shown so far. This list will undoubtedly expand as fashion week continues (Marc shows tonight!) but there has been some amazing things shown and I cannot contain the excitement!

First up, we have Jason Wu, the designer behind Michelle Obama’s gorgeous inauguration gown. What I loved most about this collection were the contrasts. There were amazing luxe and light fabrics that were offset by the dark makeup and color palette. There were also pops of colors like rich berries and yellow to tie in the springtime. There were definitely tons of pieces that caught my attention in this collection. See the entire collection at NYMag.

Up next we have Christian Siriano. All I could hear in my mind is Rachel Zoe saying “I DIE. BANANAS!” as I looked at each look. Staying true to fashion, Christian presented a collection full of drama. This is the third straight collection that features oversized floppy hats and I love it! The silhouettes are ones that we’ve seen from him before, however, with the inclusion of the graphic and animal prints, its puts a new twist on them. The nude jacket with the graphic print on the inside? love it! Bonus points if it is indeed reversible!

Ok can we please discuss the shoes for a second? Once again, in collaboration with Payless, Christian gave us gorgeous talon heeled platforms. I’m pretty sure I gasped when I saw the detail shots. The blue ones? DIVINE! As with his fall 2009 shoe collection, I’m sure they will be heavily scaled back once they go into production. You can drool over the rest of the collection here.

Elise Overland is used to dressing rock stars, having been personally selected to dress Aerosmith for one of their tours. Her aesthetic is tough meets luxe so of course this would be one of my favorite collections! Working primarily with leather, she reworked classic wardrobe pieces and made them a bit more modern. I love that she included that watermelon-colored strapless dress with the nude panels on the side. It was a nice change of pace. Wearing a leather dress during the warmer months may not be the most practical choice but I love that she stuck to her guns and delivered her aesthetic with no regard for Spring’s typical looks. Before yesterday, I was unfamiliar with Ohne Titel. After a bit of digging, I found out that the duo behind the line are recent graduates from Parsons and were finalists for the coveted CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund. After seeing this collection, I am now a fan. Egyptian paintings were the inspiration for this collection and its most evident in the amazing bandaged shoes and leggings seen on the models. There were also hints of mummification with the intricate bands and knitwork which is downright incredible! While the collection was mostly dark, there were bits of white, blue and red injected to give a bit of life to it. See more of the collection here.

Last in the update is VPL (Visible Panty Line). Little tidbit, when I first graduated from college, I had an interview with them. Obviously nothing came of it but it was insane! Ok back to the collection. Victoria Bartlett says her inspiration for this collection was anatomy and she showed that through light and airy sheer fabrics, body conscious bandage dresses and knits. She even used an abstract x-ray of her skull as a graphic print. There was something so downtown chic about the entire collection and I loved the pops of oranges and blues that was used. I will be definitely attempting to recreate some of the looks with my own wardrobe. See the rest of the collection here.
What do you guys think of the featured collections? Is there anything that you’d want to add to your wardrobe?
